The Thames Discovery Programme was commissioned by the Port of London Authority to conduct a watching brief ahead of dredging in the Thames Estuary.

Our expert worked closely with the dredging team to recover the fragmentary ship wreck so that dredging could move forward.

Dredging was required for the London Gateway project, a deep-sea container port in Essex. The project involved removing fragments of a ship wreck. MOLA's marine, coastal and intertidal zone archaeology experts carried out the watching brief in close collaboration with the dredging team. The remains were lifted and identified as coming from the stern of a Thames Sailing Barge dating from the mid-19th to early-20th century.
