It was our pleasure to welcome MOLA clients, Ambassadors, Patrons and friends to our annual summer event on Tuesday evening. Entitled ‘The Evolving City’, we invited our guests to join us for an evening exploring how archaeological discovery has revealed both continuity and change throughout London – chiefly led by Dr John Pearce, Senior Lecturer in Archaeology at Kings College London.
Following a very warm welcome from MOLA’s CEO Janet Miller, Dr Pearce took us on an exciting journey of discovery through Roman London during his talk; ‘Dealing with Neighbours in Londinium’. The City Business Library set the scene for our talk; the only dedicated public library for business information and set within the historic Guildhall complex and a perfect for Dr Pearce to teach us about London's Roman heritage, prompted by the discovery of the Bloomberg writing tablets. This proved to be a very enjoyable and informative talk which included exciting and fascinating discoveries that revealed reams of knowledge about how Roman society was different but also, in many ways so similar to our modern London lives. From business transactions to burials and curses, Dr Pearce showcased the heritage of London’s society through a series of extraordinary archaeological discoveries from the last few decades; many discovered just streets away from where we were sitting.
Many of our guests stayed for an evening reception held in the John Stow Room and enjoyed lovely wines generously gifted by Rickety Bridge Winery alongside tasty canapes from social enterprise, Café Sunlight.
