In 1212, a great fire devasted many parts of Southwark...
And if that wasn’t enough, the Thames kept flooding and washing away the bank. To reclaim their land from the river the people here built a wall and set up new pottery workshops.
During excavations in the 1980s, their less successful attempts at pottery making were discovered. These included 14th century pottery wasters, the discarded remains of pots damaged during firing.
