Many fascinating, wonderful - and at times weird - events have happened here throughout time.

From frontline defence against a possible Viking invasion to 17th-century nightlife central, this site has seen it all. For millenia, this area has been a hive of activity. The people here made something out of nothing, reclaiming land from the river. Here, they lived life to the full - building pubs, theatres, and even palaces.

However, pleasure was always balanced with business. In the 1300s pottery kilns pumped out jugs and cups for drinking. By the 1600s they were making beer to put in them, and by the 1800s this area was home to the biggest brewery in the world.

As a new chapter begins at this site, we're working through its layers of time to reveal new information and stories about those who came before. Many of the finds pictured below come from sites just around the corner from 46-48 Park St, and show the wealth of archaeology already discovered in Southwark.

So, brace yourself! You’re about to hurtle through 10,000 years of human activity.
