1587-1644
This is the original theatre district. Just around the corner was the original Shakespeare’s Globe. People poured here in their thousands, paying their pennies for standing room only...
Bankside was home to four mega-theatres - the biggest in London - squeezing in up to 3000 people per play. But beware, these theatres were for everyone, including thieves and pickpockets!
The remains of the original Globe Theatre were found by MOLA in 1988, just around the corner from Park Street, under Anchor Terrace. Also nearby was the Rose Theatre. Built in 1587, this was London’s fourth theatre and the first to be built in Bankside. A 14-sided building on brick and chalk foundations; it was demolished in 1606.
