At the end of the last Ice Age over 10,000 years ago, the Thames was made up of small channels and gravel islands. People hunted wild birds and fished across the marshy floodplain. They left behind stone tools and burnt animal bone.
One of these channels, originally a freshwater stream that fed into the Thames, ran through the middle of this site.
