By the early 1800s, this site was home to the biggest brewery in the world, producing over 250,000 barrels a year. And what is a beer without somewhere to drink it? The Anchor pub next door started life as the Brewery taproom.

Archaeological excavations have uncovered brick drains, as well as either yards or gardens associated with the Anchor Public House. There has been an inn on this spot since at least 1616, although it has been rebuilt several times over the past 400 years.
