We’re excavating a large site at Primary Street, South Marston, Swindon, Wiltshire for Orion Heritage on behalf of Taylor Wimpey, who are developing a sustainable urban extension to the east of Swindon.

Before work can begin on the development, we will be investigating and recording the archaeological remains, many of which lie just below the surface.

Previous surveys of the site mean we already know quite a lot about the archaeology we will be uncovering. This wasn’t a high-status site, but for thousands of years it was home to ordinary people who farmed the land. As well as uncovering farming activity and field systems from the Iron Age (750 BC – AD 43), Roman (AD 43 – 410) and medieval period (1066 – 1485) we’ll also be investigating some mysterious Bronze Age (2500 – 750 BC) features, which could date back more than 4000 years.

During our dig, we’ll be sharing our discoveries on this site through blogs, photos, site plans and more.
