The Grade II Listed Royal Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon was recorded by MOLA ahead of its partial demolition and rebuilding in 2007. The work was required as a condition of planning and for Listed Building Consent.
An understanding of the building’s complex multi-period history was pieced together through detailed documentary research; covering the original 19th-century theatre and the later early 20th-century structure. High quality images made up a visual record of the building that was included in the final report. Aspects of particular historic significance, including the stage machinery, lifts and lighting grids were subject to detailed analytical recording.
The analysis highlighted changes in theatre technology and performance techniques, which had left their mark on the theatre’s design and architecture. Our buildings archaeologists adopted an efficient targeted approach that aligned with the overall project programme.
