Britain at Low Tide returns to Channel 4 to explore the history of our island nation
A new series of Britain at Low Tide is coming to Channel 4. Airing at 8pm on Saturdays from the 17 February, the six episode series features the work our CITiZAN team and other professional and community-led groups are doing to record our coastal and intertidal archaeology and the amazing stories that they are revealing along the way.
Every day, on sandy beaches and rocky foreshores, fascinating evidence of our island history appears and disappears as storms rage and the tide rolls in and out. In this second series palaeobiologist Dr Tori Herridge, CITiZAN archaeologists Gustav Milne and Oliver Hutchinson and archaeologist Charlotte Mecklenburgh explore the fascinating intertidal archaeology of Britain.
Each episode focusses on a geographical region, discovering its rich archaeology, including remains from all ages – prehistoric monuments, medieval ruins and World War Two shipwrecks.
CITiZAN (Coastal and Intertidal Zone Archaeological Network) delivers community-based training to create an infrastructure and network of volunteers with the skills and systems to be able to record, monitor and celebrate the highly significant, but fragile and threatened intertidal archaeological sites across England. CITiZAN has received funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund, with match funding from The Crown Estate and National Trust and further support from Historic England. MOLA is leading the project with project partners the Council for British Archaeology and the Nautical Archaeology Society.
Join in the discussion on social media with the #BritainAtLowTide. Download the CITiZAN app from ITunes or Google Play and start recording your local intertidal archaeology!
