We are teaming up with the Museum of London to host a training excavation this summer.
The dig will explore the grounds of Headstone Manor in Harrow, the site of a medieval moated manor and home to Harrow Museum. Three sold out courses of five days are programmed from the 30 June to the 18 July 2014.
For the trainees it is an opportunity to gain first-hand experience of excavation at a real archaeological site. Participants will be trained by MOLA’s experienced professional archaeologists in the techniques of excavation, recording, drawing and post-excavation assessment.
Once owned by the Archbishops of Canterbury before the English Reformation, through the centuries this house has been radically extended and altered. This year’s fieldwork aims to explore parts of the building that are no longer visible above ground, adding to the story of this historic manor. Archaeologists hope to learn more about the gatehouse that once guarded the entrance to this Grade I listed building.
An open day for families is being held on Sunday 20 July. Visitors can see some of the finds from the site, go on a site tour and experience medieval re-enactments.
