The Streets They Left Behind mapping project is an online interactive resource created in collaboration with the London Borough of Islington and with funding from the HLF. Marking the centenary of the First World War, it maps the last known addresses of service-people from the London Borough of Islington that died during the conflict.
Director of Technology Solutions Dr Peter Rauxloh, working with John Shepherd of the London Borough of Islington, utilised MOLA’s expertise in spatial data management to map the information of 9,400 individuals from the Islington Book of Remembrance database. The data included last known home addresses, regiments, units, names and grave and memorial references. They then created and populated the GIS mapping platform, developing the foundation for an interactive map. The Islington Book of Remembrance amasses the names of all civilian and military casualties of war from the 20th century to the 1950s.
A red poppy marks the location of each individual originally from Islington, including those that settled abroad, giving the project a global reach. Clicking on the icon provides information including the individual’s service record and place of burial.
The resource is an ongoing project, allowing users to carry out unique searches on individual entries. A team of volunteers will be making improvements to the map, including expanding existing data and adding new entries.
