Pint of Archaeology: Stories from Horsemonger Lane Gaol
Join us for a pint of archaeology at The Roebuck pub in Southwark...
Horsemonger Lane in Southwark (now Harper Road) was once home to the Surrey County Gaol. Opened in 1798 and closed in 1878, this was one of Georgian and Victorian London’s notorious prisons.
From murderers to coiners, debtors to enemies of the state, thousands were held here. And in the 80 years it was open, 135 people were executed on the prison roof in front of huge crowds.
Join us at the Roebuck Pub in Southwark to hear stories of some of the real people imprisoned here, and ask yourself - did the punishment fit the crime?
We'll also be giving an update on our work at King's Place, and you'll have another chance to try your hand our ancient games.
