The excavations at Eastern Green, south of the A45, Coventry, were carried out by L – P : Archaeology (now part of MOLA) on behalf of Orion Heritage and Hallam Land Management. You can read more about the site and the progress of the excavations through these weekly update blogs.
We are coming to the end of this stage of the excavations and, finally, the sun has come out, transforming our windy, Coventry field into something resembling a desert!
On site we have uncovered a big feature - the medieval boundary ditch.
The medieval ditch was cut into the bedrock, and also right through remains of the north wall of the Roman building! In the ditch we actually found a lot of Roman roof tiles - some of the slate tiles even still had nails in them!
The archaeologists are finishing off recording features, taking environmental samples, recording GPS points, and checking the photo register.
And, when we leave the site, work continues! During the post-excavation phase (referred to by archaeologists as post-ex), we will be examining all the finds and processing the environmental samples taken. This will help us to further the site's use, and all the information will be turned into a report. We will continue to update the blog throughout post-ex, so watch this space!
