We are a community archaeology project that is dedicated to monitoring, recording and sharing the archaeology of the Thames foreshore. Building on over 15 years of dedicated work, we aim to share the history and heritage of the River Thames with everyone.

We launched in 2008 with support from the Heritage Lottery Fund and have been hosted by MOLA since 2011. Our work builds upon the earlier work of the Thames Archaeological Survey in the 1990s. We’ve been supported by a wide range of organisations including the City Bridge Trust, Tideway, City of London Archaeological Trust, Historic England and most recently our River Recoveries project through the National Lottery Heritage Fund.

What we do

Fieldwork

We run a series of fieldwork visits to sites along the river during the Spring and Summer. The fieldwork blocks normally last four to five days and give our volunteers and the TDP team a chance to record archaeology in detail. The hand drawn plans produced during fieldwork are later digitised and help us to build up a picture of change over time.

Monitoring

The monitoring groups ‘adopt’ stretches of the foreshore that they visit regularly, noting any changes to the condition of the archaeology. The foreshore is a dynamic environment and regular visits give members of these groups an in-depth knowledge and understanding of their patch.

Public Guided Walks

We run a programme of guided walks on the foreshore for the public throughout the year. These take place at a variety of sites across London. Look out for our walks on our Events page.

You can also book a private walk with one of our archaeologists. Private walks can be tailored to your groups’ interests and we can accommodate up to 25 people. Get in touch for more information!

Outreach

We are always excited to share what we know about the archaeology of the foreshore, so we take part in a wide range of events across London. Details about these can be found on our Events page

Young Archaeologists' Club

The perfect chance for young people with an interest in archaeology. These sessions get young people exploring the archaeology of the foreshore in a fun and engaging way.

For more information, check out our Young Archaeologists' Club page.

Research

Finding out more about the archaeology and history of the Thames is at the very core of what TDP does. Researching and understanding the stories that archaeology tells us is a crucial part of our work.

Who are we?

The TDP team is led by Claire Harris (TDP Development Officer), with the support of hundreds of volunteers. If you have any questions, please email thamesdiscovery@mola.org.uk.
