Stane Street ran south from London Bridge to Chichester, bringing goods from across the Roman Empire to Southwark. People here had expensive tastes - in life and death.

Roman Southwark might have been on the outskirts of the capital, but the people buried here were some of the wealthiest in society. In 2017, archaeologists excavating nearby uncovered the remains of a mausoleum, a grand Roman tomb. It was likely one of many monuments to the dead which once lined Stane Street.

These Roman objects represent just a small fraction of the rich tapestry of life and death lying just beneath our feet.
