Portals to the Past was a free exhibition organised by Crossrail at their Tottenham Court Road Visitor Information Centre in central London.
The popular exhibition and lectures series appealed to local people interested in exploring the archaeology of their area.
The largest infrastructure project in Europe, public interest in Crossrail and the archaeology of the project was considerable. Crossrail responded positively and proactively by sharing the discoveries from its sites and providing opportunities for the public to find out more.
Following an exceptional year of discovery at Crossrail sites, the month-long Portals to the Past exhibition was held in early 2014. A selection of archaeological finds, excavated by MOLA, was displayed at the exhibition for visitors to explore; including skulls from Roman London, prehistoric flint tools and objects found in a Black Death Plague burial ground.
In addition to helping with exhibition content MOLA specialists led a series of Crossrail-hosted evening lectures that were open to the public.
